Supporting an individual
at home!
Supporting an individual at home can be a little more challenging as we balance the needs/risks of the young person with the family dynamics and uncontrolled environment.
Start to finish process
When we support someone at home, we are trying to get things back to a point where we can let them live their lives without us. Our role is often to facilitate and coach the family together.
The Referral
Before you arrive we will have received an overview, referral form, and we gather any additional info.
Family Communication
Working in a family home can be complicated, so the office calls the family first and discusses the support and then sends them an email to iron out the fine details.
Entering the home
It's important to develop a relationship while maintaining boundaries. Talk to them about the things they would have confirmed in the email above. To reinforce what you can and cant do and what you need access to.
Safety Check
Once in the home please conduct a safety check. There are some hazards that the family may not be willing to control e.g. anything that can be used as a sharp. This is discussed with the family prior to entry and is documented on the shift. If any item threatens your safety call MindFull office or police if there is a threat to your life.
